海南建造的海洋渔船，有木帆船、机帆船、木质渔轮、玻璃钢船等。
机帆船1956年才在临高首造，木质渔轮1954年国营南海水产公司渔轮修造厂开始批量生产，早年玻璃钢船只能造小艇。
1965年以前，海南沿海各地建造的渔船以木帆船为主。1963年的调查数据显示，木帆船超过6000艘，其中30吨以上的800多艘，占13%。海南木帆船总体分为5大类，60种。其中：
拖网渔船17种，知名的有临高拖风、陵水拖风、文昌拖风、琼山拖风等，这些渔船大部分为近代船型。
刺网渔船15种，如文昌的飞鱼船，临高的红三渔船。
钓业渔船10种，知名的有儋州的母子式红鱼钓船和红骨钓船。
定置网渔船9种，如海口的张网船，崖城、莺歌海的张网船。
其他渔船9种，如琼海的西沙特产船，万宁的引网缝合船等。
50年过去了，如今大部分渔船已经被淘汰，种类日渐减少。(刘贡)
